NHS Lanarkshire is establishing 3 new health centres in Wishaw, Kilsyth and East Kilbride, as part of a comprehensive upgrading and expansion of health provision throughout Lanarkshire. Whilst the scale and design of each building is different, they are linked by the use of common details and materials, whereas the landscape design approach for each site focusses on establishing an appropriate landscape setting to the new building, through the strategic positioning of the building within the site and the detailed treatment of the resulting external spaces.
At Wishaw, the adoption of civic improvement treatments from the wider town centre ensure the continuity and consistency of the public realm landscape which assists in integrating the new building into its local context, and a new forecourt provides a meeting place for locals. At Kilsyth, a linear tree avenue set within a broad band of block paving links and aligns the new health centre with the existing swimming pool, whilst boundary tree, shrub and hedge planting define the extent of the project within its parkland setting. In East Kilbride, clay brick paving forms a distinctive forecourt, linking to the brickwork of the building, whilst dark green holly hedges defining open spaces around the building provide a visual contrast of colour and texture with the rich red brickwork.
