Having previously prepared a masterplan for a new Sixth Form Boarding House, h+m prepared detailed hard and soft landscape designs for the new building. Integral to this process was the inclusion of measures to protect the existing mature trees on the site, around which the new boarding house had been designed and which give the site its key characteristic. Regrading of the surrounding ground merges the existing landform into the geometry of the building footprint and its associated floor levels, allowing the surrounding open, parkland lawns to extend uninterrupted to the building. The shape of the boarding house and its relationship to other school buildings and retained trees creates a series of irregular sized ‘collegiate’ spaces which link with the historical pattern of the school. Yew hedges define and delineate pedestrian routes and staff gardens, creating a distinctive and simple character to the scheme.
