As part of a limited tender competition, h+m joined a multi-disciplinary team led by Reaich and Hall to prepare proposals for the expansion and development of Kilmartin Museum, set within the extraordinary archaeological landscape of Kilmartin Glen, where early man made his everlasting marks on the landscape and fashioned a planned landscape of immense order, power and meaning.
Following our successful competition entry, our strategy of drawing inspiration from prehistoric geometries, symbols and materiality was further developed in tandem with the evolution of the building layout and design. The disciplined organisation of space around the building was retained, with parking allocated to the periphery to allow green space to connect village with museum. Traditional details of turf cope walls and hazel wattle gates provide linkages with the site’s prehistoric past within a restrained contemporary landscape design approach which creates a new setting to the expanded museum and logically links the sequence of arrival and entry to the museum and Kilmartin’s fascinating story.
