The site typifies the distinctive ‘Carse’ landscape of the upper Forth, occuping a strategic location at the ‘neck’ of a dramatic curving meander in the River Forth, providing open panoramic views to the dramatic skyline of Stirling Castle, the Wallace Monument and the Ochil Hills.

The landscape design approach establishes an appropriate setting to the new Campus in relation to its landscape context, whilst creating a pleasant learning environment for students.  An entrance forecourt forms the public face, creating a horizontal ‘plinth’ to the building frontage. An abstract interpretation of the Carse landscape, comprising a geometric pattern of planting areas and tree avenues lining the main pedestrian access, counterbalance and contrast with the building’s strongly horizontal character. The rear court comprises a paved terrace leading to a sculpted grass ramp leading towards the river, offering opportunities for general relaxation in sunny weather.  Awarded a Civic Trust Special Award for Scotland, RIAS and RIBA Awards, 2013.
