h+m undertook an initial landscape capacity study for this open agricultural site on the edge of Stewarton to establish the feasibility of developing the site for residential use. Through an understanding of the particular landscape and visual characteristics and sensitivities of the site and its surroundings, it was concluded that development could be accommodated, based on the incorporation of a series of strategic design principles to generate an overall layout which was directly responsive to its landscape and visual context.
Key design principles included:
- Setting back development from the southern elevation of the listed Lainshaw Mains Farm to retain its landmark character within the wider landscape
- Controlled vistas from the historic lanes to the south and east of the site towards the south elevation of Lainshaw Mains Farm should be incorporated into the overall development pattern
- Reinstatement of the historic footpath connection between Lainshaw House and Mains Farm should form an integral component of the overall development approach and open space pattern
- A comprehensive open space and landscape strategy should form the primary framework from which the built development pattern is designed
- Hedge planting and hedgerow trees should be introduced to reinforce the local landscape legacy of field boundary hedges and tree lines within the surrounding area.
These principles informed the preparation of an initial development layout and landscape concept plan for consultation with the local planning authority and local community.
