Scottish Resources Group operate an open cast coal site in central Fife and have commissioned Charles Jencks to design a major Land Art installation of geometric earth mounds and water features – ‘Scotloch’ - as part of the landscape restoration for the site. Additionally, SRG propose to extend mining operations into the adjacent area, including Loch Fitty, a former recreational fishing loch which would require to be drained.
h+m prepared an indicative masterplan for the extended area, aiming to integrate a range of new activities with the ‘Scotloch’ proposal and the surrounding landscape, restoring Loch Fitty for a range of uses and creating access connections with the surrounding communities and facilities, all within a coherent landscape structure. The size and extent of this project offered an opportunity to reorganise the landscape on a vast scale. A simple palette of ecological interventions aimed to improve the water quality in the water bodies and to create suitable habitats for key protected species.
