Due to declining port-related operations, Forth Ports propose a major redevelopment of the Leith Dock facility to provide a range of commercial, business and residential uses as part of a comprehensive development framework plan It was recognised that the scale and height of the development proposed had the potential to impact on the landscape setting and townscape character of Edinburgh, as well as on the more local area.
h + m were appointed to undertake an assessment of the likely impacts on the surrounding area, evaluating the proposed development at the regional, city-wide and local levels. Particular consideration was given to the landscape and seascape setting of the city, and the potential changes to this which would result from the introduction of large numbers of high buildings along the Edinburgh coastline. The character and setting of the Edinburgh World Heritage Site were also a major consideration in the assessment.
