The City of Edinburgh Council proposed to develop a range of park and ride sites around the city as part of their transport plan for the city. This involved identifying sites with close proximity to major transport routes into the city, relatively flat landform and adequate space to accommodate parking for 1000 vehicles. Many of these sites were located on Greenbelt land.
h+ m prepared the landscape design proposals for the Hermiston site, situated on open farmland adjacent to the A71. Proposals included earth mounding and planting around the periphery of the site, aimed at screening longer distance views to the car park, whilst allowing views out to the wider landscape from within the site. Local views in from adjacent roads between blocks of planting assisted in ensuring adequate security of the site. As the planting matures, the site will be absorbed into the surrounding agricultural landscape through its generous landscape treatment.
