The Highland Council proposed to upgrade, in three phases, the A832 between Achnasheen and Kinlochewe in Wester Ross from single track road to two-lane carriageway as part of its Road Hierarchy strategy.  The Council recognised from the outset the environmental sensitivities of this route, which provides the main approach to the Wester Ross National Scenic Area, and h + m were appointed to advise on the most appropriate route alignment and design, based on an understanding of the various landscape character areas through which the route passes, whilst also taking account of ecological, archaeological and geo-technical considerations.  Strategic route alignments were prepared by h + m from which the Council’s engineers generated detailed road alignments.  A process of detailed design development and refinement produced the finalised proposals for which h + m coordinated the production of accompanying Environmental Statements.  The route upgrade was completed in 2007.
